English Cricketer Moeen Ali Detained at UK Airport

April 11, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-04-11

English cricketer Moeen Ali has lashed out at airport authorities after he was detained for more than 40 minutes by UK Border Force agents at Birmingham Airport.

The Pakistani born sportsman whose family hails from occupied Kashmir was apprehended on Saturday when he was on his way to join the Worcestershire side for the opening game of the 2016 County Championship.

Branding his treatment at the airport a joke, the 28-year-old said that he never had to face a similar issue while travelling with the rest of the team in official uniform.

Ali Tweeted: “Have never been stopped at the airport when travelling with a team in uniform, but travel alone and get stopped for 40 minutes!! Joke.”

He later tweeted: “Birmingham Airport!! Hard times.”

Ali was supported by fellow English cricketers, spinner Adil Rashid and batsman Owais Shah. “Your beard might have something to do with it, #sadreally”, Shah tweeted.

The Birmingham Airport Officials confirmed that Ali had been stopped by UK Border Force agents, not because of discrimination of any kind but because he had exceeded his duty-free allowance.

A spokesperson later confirmed that the Birmingham-born all-rounder exceeded his duty-free allowance.
