After almost 485 days in detention in Egypt, Sheikh Abdul Salaam Jaad Bassiouni has been freed.
The Lenasia community leader and head of the Al-Tawhid Islamic Centre was freed from a police station in Egypt early this morning.
Bassiouni was arrested by Egypt’s national security at Cairo airport in early December 2014 with his son Bilal after flying to Egypt for his daughter’s engagement.
Bilal was released but his father remained at Tora Prison where numerous high-profile prisoners have been detained.
He is accused of being part of the Muslim brotherhood, a claim his family denies.
Bassionui’s son Bilal says the family is ecstatic his father has been released.
“At 12:50am on the 29th of March 2016 Alhamdulillah my father is officially released. He is on his way home. With the family. A joy of joy, extreme happiness, sleepless night and we are still in a state of disbelief.”
Bilal has thanked the community for their continuous support and prayers.
