The son of a Pietermaritzburg businessman has told the high court he had his father killed because he refused to accept his marriage to a non-Muslim woman.
26-year-old Jibraeel Mohideen was yesterday convicted in the Pietermaritzburg High Court of murdering Ashraf Tajoodeen.
He was arrested last week together with his three co-accused, domestic worker Emily Mchunu, Joshua Nxumalo, and Zandisele Mtshali after confessing to the murder.
Public Eye Maritzburg reports Jibraeel’s nikah (marriage) to a non-Muslim woman disgusted his father so much it strained their relationship.
“He did not allow me to live with my wife, who continued to live with her family because of my father’s stubbornness. In January, we had a heated argument over his refusal to accept my wife.”
He says Mchunu who overheard the squabble was sympathetic to his plight and offered a solution to get rid of Tajoodeen.
“I told Emily it would have been better if I did not have a father.”
Sentencing procedures are expected this week.
