Health Tips On Salt

September 05, 2007

How much of salt is good for us? A pinch of it, a spoonful or as per our taste? Some like food that’s low on salt, while, some like to sprinkle a generous amount of it before they even taste their food. So, let’s find out how much of salt is actually good for us.
In the first place, we do need some salt because:

• It regulates water content in our body.

• It is important for nerve cell communication and information processing.

• Salt balances blood sugar levels and slows down the rate of aging.

• It aids the absorption of food particles through your intestinal tract.

• Salt also clears up sinuses.

• It firms up the bone structure and prevents varicose veins. So, with all these uses, salt has proved its mettle. We need about 500 g of sodium a day to supply all our vital functions and maintain normal fluid levels, healthy muscle function and proper acidity of the blood. But, remember not to have too much of salt because:

• Salt can be a stress food.

• It causes water retention in the body and causes high blood pressure.

• Salt leaches calcium from the bones, making them weak.

• Too much of it can result to uric acid and gout.

• It loads the kidneys, gradually weakening them. It’s a good idea to substitute salt with a more natural option:

• Try black salt instead of table salt because the former is organic.

• Rock salt makes for a better option because it is entirely soluble and our body can make good use of the enzymes.

• Lemon can be a great salt substitute. Squeeze a bit of lemon into dals, veggies and chicken dishes.
