March 14, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-03-14

Four people have been arrested with stolen copper cables worth R100,000 in Johannesburg.

It’s understood the men were apprehended in the early hours of this morning after they were caught on CCTV cameras removing the copper cables from a manhole in the CBD.

JMPD officers arrested the two suspects as they tried to flee the scene – two more suspects were found hiding in the manhole and were also taken into custody.

MMC of Public safety Sello Lemao has welcomed the arrests.

“Cable theft is one of the serious crimes the city is dealing together with SAPS, JRA and City Power. Vandalism to the city’s property creates a lot of stress to the City’s infrastructures it affects Traffic Lights, Power to other places of health care, and affects communities as a whole.”

The four suspects have been charged with theft and are expected to appear in court soon.
