Weekly Panel Discussion – Unemployment

March 09, 2016

Date: 06.03.2016
Presenter: Ml Mohammed Kara
Guests: Ml Yusuf Sader; Br Ibrahim Khalil

The problem of unemployment in SA is one of the most challenging problems faced by our country. As the number of matriculants increases every year, South Africans are finding it more difficult than ever to break into the already saturated job industry. The Weekly Panel Discussion featured the views of Ml Yusuf and Ml Ibrahim on unemployment.

Ml Yusuf began the discussion by explaining the methods Nabi SAW used to empower every individual he SAW came into contact with. Nabi SAW championed the cause of people from all walks of life; he actively encouraged the Sahabah RA to make a concerted effort earn an honest living. Ml Yusuf mentioned the importance of time and that we as Muslims are required to avoid becoming lazy and idle. Muslims are productive and we are expected to benefit those around us. Although we are required to work to earn a livelihood while we are in this world, our focus should remain success in the Hereafter. Ml Yusuf rendered some advice for those people who are encountering difficulties in finding a job; we must put our trust completely in Allah SWT and then try various options and not give up. True wealth is contentment of the heart. Ml Yusuf spoke about the best time to start looking for a job – it is better to dedicate yourself to your studies but in reality very few people are able to afford to study without simultaneously earning an income. Job shadowing encourages the youth to get an understanding of the different types of jobs available before they make an actual decision on what field to go into. Ml Yusuf spoke about the qualities employers are looking for when employing workers; the most important being trustworthiness and the willingness to work hard.

Br Ibrahim gave a breakdown of the statistics of the unemployment rate in SA – 40% of South Africans are unemployed. Government initiatives are geared towards increasing the employment rate, however the social security system does not cater for the 18 – 60 year age bracket. Millions of people in SA run informal businesses but these individuals are struggling to rise above the poverty line. Government has been unsuccessful in shifting businesses in the ever changing global economy; however they have been successful in certain endeavours such as the motor industry. Affirmative action has benefited many communities. Br Ibrahim discussed technology and robots; while mechanisation is contributing to the low job rate in certain industries, it does facilitate bigger business through a global economy. We should be able to keep up with the changing times and tap into new ways of doing business. Br Ibrahim also commented on the poor quality education system in the country. Although unions and minimum wage laws contribute greatly to the problems faced by businesses in SA, the number one issue for business owners is crime. Br Ibrahim tied up the discussion with Ml Yusuf’s views when he spoke about students aligning the work they are currently involved in to the work they are eventually planning to do. It is essential to learn how to manage your money once you start earning. The discussion was concluded with Br Ibrahim mentioning the importance of setting up and growing your own business.
