Organisers for the Israeli Apartheid week (IAW) claim Wits University management led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Habib have allegedly threatened students over Palestine information displays that have been erected around campus.
The group claims the university demanded that students immediately dis-assemble the displays for the campaign which begins next week.
Spokesperson Rashaad Dadoo says various Wits University student societies made necessary applications to use several spaces to support the IAW campaign at the institution.
“We call for tolerance and understanding from the management of Wits University during this important campaign. #IsraeliApartheidWeek provides a rare opportunity to unite students, workers and university management around a clear human-rights issue.”
Wits University was not immediately available for comment.
IAW is an annual international series of events (including rallies, lectures, cultural performances, music shows, films and workshops) that raises awareness of Israel’s apartheid policies, violations of international law and human rights abuses toward the indigenous Palestinian people.
It is endorsed in South Africa by over 85 organizations and takes place in over 250 cities across the world.
The annual international #IsraeliApartheidWeek (IAW) campaign takes place in South Africa between 7th and 13th of this month.
