A Cape Town English teacher says educators should try and make schooling conducive for learners by embracing digital responsibility.
Gafieza Ismail from Spine Road High School in Mitchells Plain Cape Town won the Excellence in Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning Award.
The 16th National Teaching Awards were presented by the Department of Basic Education the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand last week.
Ismail says introducing technology in education enables a teacher to relate a different world to the learner.
“There is a bridge between traditional and digital, the traditional way teaches us so much discipline and respect, so we need to try and infuse the two.”
She has reiterated that teaching is not only about learning a subject but rather about educating learners to be global citizens.
Minister of the Education in the Western Cape Debbie Schäfer congratulated Ismail on receiving the award.
She says Ismail has demonstrated powerfully the important role that teachers have to play in the lives of young people, and the role that technology can play in supporting their education.
“We are delighted at Ms Ismail’s success. Ms Ismail provides an outstanding example of a teacher who is dedicated to ensuring that her learners realise their potential.”
The Western Cape Education Department nominated Ismail for the National Teaching Award after she won the top teaching award in this category in the province last year.
