MLA Applies to have Former Israeli Prime Minister Arrested Upon Arrival in SA

February 23, 2016

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2016-02-23

The Muslim Lawyers Association (MLA), have lodged documents with the National Prosecution Authority, requesting to secure the arrest of former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

Peres is expected to arrive in the country for a fund raising event hosted by Israel United Appeal and United Communal Fund.

The MLA says they are deeply perturbed that Peres, known for various human rights violations and unspeakable war crimes such as the Qana massacre, has been invited to South Africa.

Attorney Yusha Tayob says the MLA believes sufficient information has been provide to authorities to commence the investigation with regards to the breaches on international customary law and their entitlement in terms of their international obligations in the Rome Statute.

“We’ve lodged a complaint upon the South African Police Services, the National Prosecuting Authority, the Hawks and the DPCI, providing them with what we believe to be substantial information of crimes committed by him.”

Tayob says Peres cannot be called a man of peace.

“When we saw the advertisement it was quite shocking. When one considers he was involved in Israeli politics for 66 years, has been complicit in everything that occurred. We know that he was a member of the Knesset war cabinet during Cast Lead. We know that he was personally responsible for Qana, we’ve given that evidence. We must just continue to persevere and remain hopeful that the South African authorities deal with their international obligations.”

Perez is expected to arrive into country around the 28th of this month.
