Motorsport South African (MSA) is introducing a new legal street racing class to lure illegal drag racers off the streets and onto the tracks.
Several motorists have been killed at notorious street drag racing areas over the past few years in Pretoria.
It’s also a problem in Cape Town.
MSA’s Wayne Riddell said the ethos behind the creation of the street drag racing class is to reduce deaths from illegal races.
“For R200, your car can be licenced for the whole year. It will be tagged for you in the beginning of the year by professional around safety, so you doing all this illegal stuff, we’re now making it legal and this is really just to give these guys a safe playground.”
The justice project’s Howard Denbovsky has welcomed the move.
“It’s a fantastic initiative, the fact remains that the place for people to race one another is on the racetrack, in a controlled environment.”
MSA said there is at least one official drag strip in each province. – EWN / Reuters
