The Office of Pilgrim Affairs in Saudi Arabia says the reduction in the number of pilgrims is a temporary measure for the safety of Hujjaj until the completion of the expansion projects at the two holy mosques.
Saudi Gazette is reporting Hajj Minister Bandar Hajjar saying that the Haj quotas were decided by the Islamic foreign ministers in Amman in 1987.
He said the ministers of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) decided the quotas of pilgrims to be 1,000 pilgrims for each 1 million population of Muslims.
Hajjar said: “The ministers took into consideration the ongoing development projects and the limited area of the Holy Sites.”
He also stressed the importance of obtaining prior approval from the Ministry of Culture and Information before any country announces media activities for Hajj events.
Hajjar says the ministry received the heads of the 53 Pilgrims’ Affairs Offices in the Kingdom with a view to ensuring them with excellent services.
“The meetings are to remain ongoing at various times for three months to discuss the Hajj arrangements for each Muslim country.”
