November 25, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-11-25

As part of the 16 days of activism, the University of South Africa (UNISA) says there are a number of communities in South Africa that are not being referred to when it comes to issues of abuse.

UNISA together with Redeeming Hope for the Disabled hosted an awareness campaign in Lenasia South today bringing together people with disabilities, academia and society to deliberate on the experiences of gender based violence among girls and women with disabilities in the country.

Government officially launched its campaign for 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children in Mahikeng last week.

UNISA’s Dr. Sindile Ngubane-Mokiwa says the aim of the campaign is to sensitize communities on how they can respond to the needs of people with disabilities.

“In order to fight gender based and then towards people with disabilities, we need to actually try and get people to be more responsive  and friendly in their approach when it comes to people with disabilities when they are actually coming up with approaches to eliminate gender based violence.”
