Construction company Murray and Roberts has expressed concern over the temporary bridge that collapsed in Sandton yesterday.
The company was responsible for building the temporary bridge which claimed the lives of at least two people and injuring 23 others.
The scaffolding supporting the construction of a bridge which is being built parallel to Grayston Drive in Sandton collapsed onto the M1 at around 3:45pm on Wednesday afternoon.
In a statement, Ed Jardim, spokesman for Murray & Roberts confirmed that the construction on the bridge was done by the company.
“We’re very concerned about those injured. This is a very busy highway and this was an active site,” he said.
Jardim said he was not aware at this stage of any construction workers being injured.
“The exact cause of the incident is not known at this time. All of our incident response procedures have been initiated, our support services have been mobilised and relevant authorities have been advised.”
Meanwhile Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau called the collapse of the temporary bridge connecting Alexandra to Sandton “one of the most unfortunate incidents experienced in recent past”.
Tau said, “Corrective action will be taken against those who are responsible for this and the city will conduct its own internal investigation into what happened.
“We must not pre-empt what happened. We will await investigation,” Tau said.
