Veteran anti-apartheid stalwarts Prema Naidoo and Dr Yussuf Saloojee have been honoured for their courage.
The Lenasia African National Congress, Palestine Solidarity Alliance and Ahmed Kathrada Foundation say the veteran activists have a rich legacy, having worked together for the struggle of a democratic South Africa.
The organisations say during apartheid many activists were thrust into political activistism to fight for social justice
High Commissioner of India Ruchi Ghanashyam says Naidoo and Saloojee have lived lives of courage and sacrifice.
“It is not every day in life that we come across people who sacrificed everything without knowing if they would get anything in return for it.”
Naidoo’s son, Kuben, the deputy governor of the South African Reserve Bank says he’s proud of his father.
“It’s a wonderful celebration. It’s wonderful to see a lot of his friends here.”
Saloojee’s niece Shireen says her uncle has a rich legacy.
“He’s always helped raise the bar and set the benchmark for human rights and activism.”
Naidoo and Saloojee’s 70th birthdays were also celebrated at the gathering. – EWN
