Eighty people including sixty illegal immigrants have now been arrested in an early morning raid at the Thembelihle informal settlement near Lenasia.
The raid started with police officers, soldiers and home affairs officials surrounding the entire settlement.
Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela says the raid was happening because Thembelihle had been identified as a hotspot for violent criminal activity.
“We are conducting an operation here in Thembelihle since early in the morning and we are still continuing. Already we had arrested suspects for possession of dagga and also illegal immigrants.”
Makhubela says they will continue with the operation into the afternoon.
“We are appealing to those people who are committing crimes in the area that we are on the ground with our intelligence and well make sure that that those places are raided and people will be arrested.”
Meanwhile, the Thembelihle Crisis Committee has welcomed the raid but has warned that it could fuel xenophobic attacks.
Committee Chairperson, Bhayiza Miya, says, “We are not against anything about the raid. But if they’re bringing the raids because of the xenophobic attacks, we might have a problem.”
