A new mataaf (circumambulation area) in the haram in Makkah in Saudi Arabia with an hourly capacity for 100,000 worshipers will be opened in Ramadaan to cater for the growing number of pilgrims visiting the kingdom.
Sultan Al-Qurashi, director of project management at the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques, said they are currently working on utility buildings, which include government offices, the operations room, health department, Red Crescent, Civil Defense, and other related offices.
“About 95 percent of such buildings have been completed.”
As part of the new extensions, hundreds of sunshades were also installed in the haram’s courtyards.
The latest expansions are part of a three phase project with the third phase of the project expected to be completed by the end of this year.
