Concerns have been raised after a white substance has been discovered in the Klip River near Eikenhof in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.
It’s feared that industrial companies in Nancefield may be allegedly dumping chemicals into the river resulting in a chemical reaction and causing it to foam.
Johannesburg City Park say the possible pollution of the Klip River by manufacturing companies poses a serious problem for the wetlands in the area including religious groups who use the river for baptism rituals.
Joburg City Parks Jenny Moodley says the department was not aware of the possible environmental hazzard, but will take action.
“It’s regarded as an emergency. Daniel Masemolo from the environmental infrastructure services department has been alerted to the concern and he’s going to send out some inspectors.”
Moodley says it is possible that manufacturing comapanies may be spewing chemicals into the river resulting in the foaming of the river body.
“Sometimes because of the checmical reaction to water it looks like a slate, but its basically foam.”
City parks says it will issue a report once the investigation is completed.
