Lenasia Man Arrested for Shooting at Thembelihle Protestors

February 26, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-02-26

A 47-year-old man has been arrested in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg after he opened fire on protesting residents of Thembelihle informal settlement on Wednesday night.

The Lenasia man allegedly shot at a group of protestors who had blocked parts of the K43 road near the Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital.

Police say residents were protesting throughout the night and apparently wanted to burn down the electrical boxes in the area when the Lenasia community approached them.

“One of the community members from Extension 11 took out a gun and shot at the crowd coming from Thembelihle. Two were injured and taken to hospital. We arrested the one who shot at the group, Police spokesman, Warrant Officer, Kay Makhubela said.

The residents are demanding water, sanitation and housing and want the MEC for Human Settlements Jacob Mamabolo to address their grievances.

Makhubela said their units are on the scene monitoring the situation.
