Spy Cables Implicate South Africa in the Biggest Leak of State Security Documents

February 24, 2015

Top secret Spy Cables exposed by Al Jazeera Network has implicated South Africa in the biggest leak of state security documents in the country’s history with Johannesburg being described as the “El Dorado of espionage”

Al Jazeera last night revealed details of South Africa’s murky intelligence operations through documents in its possession spanning a period from 2006 until December 2014 which include detailed briefings and internal analyses written by operatives of South Africa’s State Security Agency (SSA).

Documents also reveal the South Africans’ secret correspondence with the US intelligence agency, the CIA, Britain’s MI6, Israel’s Mossad, Russia’s FSB and Iran’s operatives, as well as dozens of other services from Asia to the Middle East and Africa.

The volume of information which is believed to be on par with Wiki Leaks was received through a digital leak.

However unlike the Edward Snowden documents that focus on electronic signals intelligence, commonly referred to in intelligence circles as “SIGINT”, the Spy Cables deal with human intelligence, or “HUMINT”.

One of the first documents reveals how two men were arrested for trying to sell blueprints and components for weapons stolen from arms maker Denel.

The most shocking revelation of the spy cables reveal that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s 2012 warning to the UN General Assembly that Iran was 70% of the way to completing its “plans to build a nuclear weapon” was contradicted and not suspected by Israel’s spies.

With the leak being the largest of its kind in South Africa’s history there’ve now been calls for an urgent briefing of the security cluster.
