“You are Broken Man Presiding over a Broken Society” – Maimane

February 18, 2015

DA parliamentary leader Musi Maimane on Tuesday accused President Jacob Zuma of “breaking Parliament” by letting police into the National Assembly and laughing as they dragged out EFF MP’s.

Maimane minced no words in his scathing attack on President Jacob Zuma when he took to the podium during the State of the Nation debate in parliament.

From calling the president dishonourable to accusing Zuma of trampling over Nelson Mandela’s legacy, Maimane tore into Zuma’s State of the Nation address.

“This honourable man is in our presence here today…In these chambers just five days ago, you broke Parliament.”

Maimane said he was using the term “honourable” out of respect for Parliament and warned Zuma that it did not apply to him personally. “Please don’t take it literally because you are not an honourable man. You are a broken man presiding over a broken society.”

Maimane raised 4 other prominent jabs at Zuma that caught the attention of the country:

  • “You are willing to break every democratic institution to try and fix the legal predicament you find yourself in.”
  • “You laughed. You laughed while the people of South Africa cried for their beloved country.”
  • “You laughed while trampling Madiba’s legacy – in the very week that we celebrated 25 years since his release.”
  • “Honourable President, we will never forgive you for what you have done.”

Earlier on Tuesday, presiding officers Baleka Mbete and Thandi Modise defended the use of police to remove MPs from the National Assembly.

Opposition parties have condemned it as a violation of the constitutional separation of powers.
