Malawians Starving After Devastating Floods

Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has urged South Africans to continue donating aid to Malawi to alleviate the destruction caused by heavy rains and flooding in recent weeks.

The Muslim body along with Namanolo Islamic Educational Trust and Asian Relief Aid (AMRA) is in the country distributing thousands of relief packs containing essential items to get Malawians back on their feet.

Most Malawian people based in villages grow their own crops to meet their food requirements. It’s these areas which were the worst hit by the floods, posing a critical problem.

A local resident of Blantyre, Andrew Solomon a driver for a local petrol filling station said people have no food and are starving.

“There is a lot of starvation because of the outcome of the floods in Malawi.”

Solomon said everything flood victims had or owned have been washed away by the floods.

“At the moment people don’t have food, their livestock’s and houses has been washed away and people have drowned… it needs many more hands to come across and help these people, said Solomon.

While relief agencies continue to do sterling work in the flood ravaged country, the World Bank has assured it will assist the country with $50 million to help in maintaining areas that were affected by the floods.
