Lawyers for Sheikh Abdul Salaam Bassiouni who heads the Al Tawheed Islam Centre in Lenasia said that he continues to be detained by Egyptian authorities but has not yet been formally charged.
Bassiouni who was detained in December last year for allegedly being a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and aiding and assisting the organization has spent more than 60 days incarceration.
“At this point in time the only thing we can say is that his incarceration days have been extended…Each time he appears before the prosecution they extended it for a further 15 days.” the official spokesperson for the Bassiouni family, attorney Ferhana Ismail told Radio Islam.
“Subsequently to our own investigations and consulting with his Egyptian counsel, there are no formal charges that have still been levelled against him,” Ismail said.
Ismail said they have engaged with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation on several occasions who have been assisting on various levels.
“We are still busy engaging with them in trying to secure Sheikhs safe release and safe return to South Africa. However the South African government’s hands are tied to a certain extent in that they cannot interfere in the legal process of another country.”
Ismail confirmed that Sheikh Bassiouni has had a back injury but is doing well.
“Alhamdulillah he is recovering and he’s in good health,” said Ismail.
