Lenasia Resident Riad Malek’s Killers Sentenced to 25 Years Behind Bars

January 30, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-01-30

Two suspects found guilty of the murder of 45-year-old Riad Malek in Lenasia Extension 10 have been each sentenced to 25 years in Prison in the Palmridge High Court, east of Johannesburg today.

The sentence includes 10 years for attempted murder, 5 years for the attempted murder of Malek’s 10-year old nephew Saad, 12 years for attempted robbery, 8 years for the possession of illegal firearms and 5 years for possession of ammunition.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Malek was fatally shot, his wife sustained gunshot wounds while his 10-year old nephew escaped injury in November last year.

In handing down sentence, Judge Eben Jordaan said the acts perpetrated by the convicted murderers were despicable.

“You showed no respect to the life of others and the life of the victim and you should serve a lengthy prison sentence.”

Mohammed Yazeed Malek, the son of Riad Malek said the family is satisfied with the sentence.

“True justice will only happen in aakhirah (hereafter), but Alhamdulillah we are grateful and make shukr to Allah because others will be spared from the same thing happening to them. We should all stand together to bring down these criminals.

Mohammed Yazeed said he and his mother Fatima have found a measure of closure.

“The pain of losing my father hasn’t diminished but it does bring a sense of closure that these people are in prison.
