Tshwane Metro Cops Try to Solicit Bribe from Head of Crime Line

January 06, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-01-06

Motorists are urged to be responsible and report the solicitation of bribes immediately after CrimeLine head Yusuf Abramjee was stopped by Tshwane Metro Police officers and a bribe was solicited by one of the officers.

Abramjee was travelling along the R55 near Laudium on Monday when he was stopped by Tshwane Metro Police officers who were operating speed measuring equipment.

Abramjee refused to pay a bribe. He told the officer he was not speeding and the officer refused to show him the speed reading.

“I immediately alerted the Tshwane City Manager, Jason Ngobeni who promised action.”

“A sting operation was setup by the Tshwane Metro Police Internal Affairs department and the two officers were arrested,” said Abramjee.

“We compliment Mr Abramjee for standing up against corruption and doing the right thing. This is the spirit of Lead SA which he constantly drives and JPSA supports,” said Howard Dembovsky, the National Chairman – Justice Project South Africa (NPC)

The two metro officers were currently being held at the Wierdabrug police station and were expected to appear in the Centurion Magistrate’s Court soon where they were to apply for bail.

Tshwane metro police department’s Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the officers would be served with notices for suspension.

“They would have seven days to reply. Thereafter the department would decide on whether or not to suspend them.”

“As the City of Tshwane and Tshwane metro police, we are zero tolerant on corruption,” said Mahamba.
