South Africa loses veteran news broadcaster, Munadia Karaan (ra)

February 01, 2014

umm Abdillah, Radio Islam Programming – 2014.02.01

South African Muslims woke up to the sad news of the passing of veteran news broadcaster, Munadia Karaan. Munadia (47) endured a long and public battle with cancer.  Her passion and tenacity as a community worker drove her to become an outstanding journalist and radio broadcaster. During her 11-year tenure as programme manager at The Voice of the Cape, Karaan conceptualised innovative shows, which took the radio station to new heights.

“Karaan covered many community issues, but her niche in Haj, Halal and contemporary Islam issues have left an indelible mark on listeners. VOC Open Lines was her brainchild in 2009, a show tagged as current, contemporary and controversial. Karaan presented the show with gusto and took on sensitive topics that very few dared to cover."  For many years, listeners woke up to Karaan’s vibrance and vitality on VOC’s weekend entertainment show Saturday Live and more recently, Sunday Live, the news analysis programme.

Munadia became involved with VOC in the first five days of its broadcast in January 1995 and then full-time in the year 2000. Despite taking ill in 2010 and being relieved of her programming duties, Karaan remained its Webmaster until her passing.

Her blogs, especially those dealing with her cancer were a source of inspiration and aspiration reflective of her doggedness and fighting spirit.

She was often quoted as saying: “My dua was answered, and is the means by which I can live up to my name – to be a Munadi’ (a caller to Islam). It is how I can serve my Creator by serving humanity.”
