The 2nd Imam Qasim Nanotwi Award Conference being held in Azaadville, South Africa hosting delegates from 80 different countries ends tonight insha Allah.

Speaking on Sabahul Muslim to Moulana Sulaimaan Ravat, Mufti Siraaj Desai, a leading South African scholar, gave an overview on the aims of the conference and of some of the papers presented on Sunday, 19 January 2014.

“Some of the aims are to showcase the beliefs of the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa’a and why we cannot let go of mazh’habs. There is also the aim of highlighting the positives of an affiliation to Deoband, and present an award for lifelong service to humanity.”

“Among the papers delivered on Sunday:

1. The Development of the four Madha’hib (a generic term for a school of thought within fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence)) from the Ahadith. A former Mufti in Iraq, Abdul Malik Al Sa’di, who now lives in Jordan, presented this. This highlighted how following a madh’hab is no different to following the ahadith of the Prophet [pbuh].

2. The Development of Hadith as a subject, and understanding the degrees of differences in ahadith and how to reconcile seeming contradictions. This was presented by Sh. Qasim Ali Sa’di a Hadith scholar at Al Ahzar.

3. Mufti Rafi’ Usmani (Pakistan) presented a paper on strategies for Muslims living as minorities to preserve the Deen in their respective territories.

4. The interrelatedness and co-dependence of Tasawwuf and Sharia’ from the Quran and Sunnah, by Ml Abdul Hafidh Makki.

5. How Islamic society rose above suppression in East Turkistan.”

Monday’s program was due to start at 9.30 am and tonight local South African welfare organisations such as the Prison Board and Jamiatul Ulama will be given time to showcase their missions, insha Allah.
