Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2013-10-09

A shootout has taken place between two Lenasia youngsters and Gauteng police officers in Diamant Street in Lenasia Extension 5, South of Johannesburg.

A source told Radio Islam that at around 2:50pm this afternoon (9 October); Gauteng Police tried stopping a blue Fiat Uno with two youngsters inside along the N12 Eldorado Park/Vanderbijlpark highway after they skipped a road block.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop almost knocking over the Gauteng officer.

A high speed car chase ensued between the Gauteng officer and the alleged suspect. A witness who saw the chase said the vehicle in which the suspects were fleeing was swerving on the highway, pushing other vehicles off the road in their attempt to make a getaway.

The chase eventually led into Trout Street in Lenasia Extension 7 where the Gauteng officers fired upon the vehicle in order to force it to stop; the car eventually came to standstill when the suspects realized there was no way out.

There were no injuries reported

It’s alleged the suspects may have been highly intoxicated and possibly under the influence of drugs.

The two youngsters were arrested.

Police are investigating.
