Eikenhof Residents Angry after Shacks Demolished

August 07, 2014

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2014-08-05

The R554 was blocked to traffic on Thursday morning because residents of Eikenhof, south of Johannesburg, were throwing stones at passing cars.

Chief-Supt Wayne Minnaar said two illegal shacks in Jacksons Drift informal settlement were demolished on Tuesday, angering residents.

Roads were blockaded with burning tyres and rocks and police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the ranging crowd.

Ward councillor Thabile Nkosi said residents wre being moved to RDP housing and that the community was not supposed to reallocate the land when stands became vacant or the informal settlement would never be closed.

Minnaar said: “Motorists can use the Golden Highway as an alternative.”
