A gang of men robbed musallees (worshippers) at a central Johannesburg masjid this week, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

“The case was only opened yesterday [Saturday] but the incident happened on Thursday,” Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.”

Six unknown people attacked those people while they were praying and robbed them of cellphones, cash, and the masjid safe.

“No injuries were reported and no shots fired.” Dlamini said there was no indication that the group was armed.

“Our masjids are being robbed. Our brothers and sisters are being robbed and cold bloodedly murdered. The Muslim Ummah must stand up and do something. Allah expects that from us,” said anti-crime crusader Yusuf Abramjee.

“We condemn the incident. We need to be worried when places of worship come under attack. Indications are crime is on the increase and its very concerning. We have to be vigilant, unite and fight crime,” added Abramjee.

No arrests have been made yet.

It was unclear why the case was opened only on Saturday.

The masjid is at the corner of President and Von Brandis streets.

Abramjee appealed to the community to the community to blow the whistle on crime by sending a SMS to Crime Line on 32211 or call Crime Stop on 0860 10111.
