June 25, 2014

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2014-06-25

Residents have taken to social media venting their anger and frustration after another power outage in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

As winter settles in, there are reports of widespread power outages across Lenasia this morning affecting Extension 5 to 10 of the suburb.

Shehera Khan (@Shaida02) tweeted:  “@Faizie143 no power can’t tune in. Please I have a mother that’s bed ridden and on oxygen 24hrs a day, I don’t want to lose my mother plz.”

While Douchebag (@tofindadouche) tweeted: “@Faizie143 gorimaa isn’t happy wth the current electricity situation.Samoosas ne handoo not ready for ramadhaan. Pls gv us some consolation.”

“The problem this time is related to possible cable theft and illegal electricity connections. I know power was out from approximately 6am this morning through most extensions apart from (extension) 1 and 2,” Councilor Zarina Motala told Radio Islam.

“City Power is on site at the moment at the Nirvana substation. Major repair work needs to be done. There was a surge in the transformers at Nirvana substation resullting in the backfeeds facilities to the extensions being damaged,” she said.

Motala said the problem of recurring power outages in Lenasia and surrounds have been escalated to high authority.

“It is already escalated to a member of the mayoral committee, to the Managing Director (Sicelo Goodwill Xulu) of City Power even with the Chief Whip of the council Councilor Prema Naidoo,” said Motala.

Lenasia Eldorado Park, Klipspruit, Nancefield, Devland, and surrounding areas was plunged into darkness on June 5 when thieves raided steel from pylons resulting in their collapse.

The thieves have been subsequently been arrested.
