Lenasia Residents in the Dark as the Cold Sets In

June 06, 2014

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2014-06-06

City Power technicians are working fervently to repair damaged pylons in Lenasia and restore power to residents in Southern Joburg as soon as possible.

As the mercury dipped to below zero overnight in parts of Gauteng, residents in Lenasia, Eldorado Park, Klipspruit and Nancefield have been left in the dark for over 24 hours.

Lufuno Bale, the area manager for City Power in Lenasia said the Nirvana substation is back on load, meaning parts of Eldorado Park and Klipspruit West is back to normal.

“We are anticipate to be restoring the supply temporarily for full load in the Lenasia area around 19:00 tomorrow.”

City Power’s Louis Pieterse says cross members of the 88kv pylons between the Nirvana and Nancefield substations were stolen, causing the bolts to loosen at the base of a pylon, resulting in the collapse of one of them.

“The next pylon on the circuit also collapsed as a result of the strain.”

Meanwhile ANC ward councilor Zarina Motala warned residents to treat all electricity points as live at all times and asked motorists to take caution as many robots in the area were also affected by the electricity outage.
