An attempted hijacking in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg on Wednesday evening at about 9:30pm, resulted in a shootout that possibly left one hijacker wounded.
Yusuf* a resident of Lenasia said he was returning from extension 5 along with his three friends in his Golf 6, when he noticed that he was being followed by another car with three occupants inside. “I don’t know where these guys followed us from.”
“We turned right into Starling Street; put our indicator on to reverse park into my garage. As we were reversing these guys pulled up in a black Alfa Romeo,” said Yusuf.
Yusuf said the black Alfa Romeo stopped in the middle of the road and the passenger with a balaclava covering his face got out from the passenger side baring a firearm and running into the yard.
“So I basically drew my firearm at that stage and he came to the driver’s side door, opened the door, put the gun to my friend’s chest and told my friend: ‘Get out before I shoot you.’ So I stretched across the driver’s seat and I shot at him, hitting him in the chest,” said Yusuf.
Yusuf said the hijacker backed stepped and returned fire hitting the back window of the Golf 6 and ran out of the garage.
A shoot out then ensued between the hijackers and Yusuf . “I saw the guy jumping into their car and they fired back at me and then I opened fire and they fled.”
The Police’s Kay Makhubela confirmed the incident and said a case of attempted murder has been opened.
“No one was injured from the car, we don’t know whether the suspects were injured, but we are still searching for the suspects so the investigation in this regard is ongoing,” said Makhubela.
