Daily Maverick Allows Alternate Opinion on Al-Qaeda Issue

May 16, 2013

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News-2013-05-16

De Wet Potgieter’s article: “Al-Qaeda: Alive and well in South Africa" in the Daily Maverick has flustered the online portal of news and analysis questioning why they have been in the firing line.

In the last few days The Daily Maverick has been at the center of media scrutiny and even critical social media opinions. This prompted the editor of The Daily Maverick Branko Brkic to approach Radio Islam’s content producer Ejaz Khan to write an opinion article for them surrounding Potgieters controversial article. Khan was also asked by Brkic to garner another organisation to submit an article.

Khan says “Brkic asked me to write an article for The Daily Maverick (Dropping the Q Bomb) regarding my opinion on the feelings of the Muslim man on the street. I accepted this opportunity to express my views and hopefully try to set the record straight on an issue that has got all South African Muslims saying, ‘here we go again.”

Moulana Ebrahim Bham the secretary of the Jamiatul Ulama also submitted an opinion article (Sensationalisation of Stale Tales) as the organisation represents Muslims in South Africa. Moulana Bham said, “The Daily Maverick had given the Jamiatul Ulama a chance to respond on that, and really those that have the opportunity, I would recommend that they…And a response from both Ejaz from Radio Islam from a personal perspective.”

“And I think that is so important because here is a perspective from an individual who is a young person, energetic and he’s giving his perspective over what he had read. There is a more formal response from the Jamiatul Ulama…and people will be able to see our view point in much more greater detail,” added Moulana Bham.
