Palestine bleeds from fresh wounds daily

April 11, 2014

2014.04.11

Guest contributor Saajidah Malvinah reminds us of fresh violence on land housing Islam’s 3rd Haram.

On 22 March 2014 The Middle East Monitor reported a blood bath in the refugee camp of Jenin. Israeli security agents assassinated 3 people and injured 14 others in a pre dawn raid. Allegations have been made that the operation was carried out in coordination with the Palestinian Authority [P.A]. According to Ynet Security, after surrounding the Palestinian building, Palestinian security service in the area were told to stay in their offices. At the funeral of the three victims 15 000 mourners attended the funerals chanting and demanding: “Where are you, Abaas? They killed us whilst you were watching!”

The three victims were Hamzah Abu al Haija who was the commander of Al Qassam Brigade; Yarzan Mahmud Jabarin, member of Al-Aqsa martyrs Brigade; and Mahmoud Abu Zeina who was affiliated with the Al Quds brigade. The truth of the matter is that when the IDF forces stormed the compound and started shooting, armed Palestinians including Abu al Haija retaliated by firing shots. Ynet Security claims the IDF soldiers were lightly injured in the gun battle. During the gun battle, Abu al Haija was martyred and Abu Zeina and Abu Jabari were carrying the deceased body when the IDF forces murdered them. Palestinian leaders have been outraged, resistance groups are outraged and have described purposeful Israeli escalation, which threatens to spawn a surge of violence. The three resistance groups have vowed retaliation to avenge their deaths and retaliate with strong force.

Palestinians have always been under oppression and suppressed by armed Israeli forces from the late 1800’s and by 1948 when Israel was declared state, the carnage and massacres increased. Occupation forces have warned that Jenin could become the capital of resistance stressing that this was a concern to the Israeli military. Israeli newspaper Maariv quoted an unnamed Israeli soldier as saying that the military forces repeatedly face armed confrontations with armed militants. It was also pointed out that it takes seconds for residents to gather by hundreds around the occupation forces and besiege them.

Palestinians are tired and fed up of being persecuted. 700-800 Palestinians are arrested every year, most between the ages of 12-18 years. They are treated inhumanely. The U.N committee on human rights and children released a report in 2013, which found that children were subjected to solitary confinement, torture, death threats and sexual assaults whilst in prison.

The coastal city of Gaza has become the world’s biggest open-air prison. Hamas won the democratic elections and since then there has been a blockade on Gaza. Every few days Gaza is targeted and Israel regularly bombs this over-populated city. In 2009 Israel massacred 1400 people and 5000 were injured in Operation Cast Lead, which lasted 22 days. Gaza residents say they have not been adequately punished by Israel and fear a bombing which will totally annihilate them.

Musjid-ul-Aqsa, Islam’s third holiest site is regularly stormed by settlers who are escorted by security and Israeli soldiers. On January 24, Minister of Housing and Construction, or Minister of Destruction, as Palestinians have dubbed him, said that Aqsa will be destroyed and the third temple rebuild. Since then several ancient sites including a cemetery from the Abbasid dynasty has been destroyed.

These are just a few of the many challenges facing Palestinians on a regular basis. They have come to the conclusion that peace with Israel is not possible and have called the once popular resistance group Fatah  ‘sell outs’. Israel claims to be negotiating for peace on one hand but the aggression continues. Palestinians have taken to social media to speak and vent out their frustration, as they are tired of waiting for the world to take action. “We trust our Creator alone. We shall soon be victorious.”
