A café in Lenasia South, South of Johannesburg was almost blown to bits last week (11 March) when a commercial mining bomb used in ATM bombings was discovered, according to the Lenasia Rising Sun.

Barn Security, a local security company was doing an early morning routine patrol in the area when they spotted the broken shop window at Rhea’s Café on Starling Street.

According to a spokesperson for Barn Security, when police entered the store after being summoned, they found an explosive device ready to implode the safe. The bomb squad was called in to deactivate the device.

The owner of Rhea’s Café who wanted to remain anonymous said, “The suspects were very picky and choosy. They only took the ‘fast moving stuff’… Must we work so hard for others to take away? He believes the robbery was allegedly planned by 5 suspicious males who were seen at his shop a day earlier.

Lenasia South SAPS spokesperson, Captain Manoe Kele said the suspects are believed to have entered the premises through the roof. “No one is arrested and the investigations are continuing,” he added.
