On Sunday, several inhabitants at an informal settlement in Durban North were homeless after over fifty shacks burnt down.

eThekweni fire trucks were dispatched just before 7 pm to the settlement at the corner of Sea Cow Lake Road and Johanna Road.

According to the fire department, over thirty firefighters worked over three hours to bring the inferno under control.

The Ward 34 councillor, Bobby Maharaj, had contacted disaster management teams who would assess the damage in the rain-drenched area today. No injuries were reported.

While the cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, Maharaj said they had experienced many fires in the ward over the last seven years due to illegal electrical connections.

He added that it was a significant problem, but sadly the inhabitants of the informal settlement had no other place to go, and the municipality had made no headway in building them homes; no electricity was provided to them.
