18 Pilgrims Injured in Makkah Stampede

July 02, 2016

At least 18 people have been injured in a stampede in Makkah Saudi Arabia.

It’s understood the incident happened on Friday near the haram after pilgrims gathered to mark the 27th night of Ramadan which many believe may be Laylatul Qadr (The night of power).

The night of Destiny is also the night when Jibraeel (AS) revealed the first verses of the holy Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Al-Riyadh newspaper reports the injured were treated at the scene with no patients requiring hospitalization.

The incident comes as Saudi authorities continue to unveil new safety measures for this year’s hajj in September.

A stampede at last year’s hajj near the tent city of Mina killed more than 2 000 pilgrims in the worst disaster to ever strike the annual ritual.

According to figures from foreign officials, at least 2 297 pilgrims died while Saudi Arabia issued a death toll of 769.

Newspapers reported on Friday that, among new security measures, hajj pilgrims this year will have to wear an electronic safety bracelet to store their personal information, including address and medical records.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flock to Makkah for Umrah during the last ten days of Ramadan.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Seek the night of Dignity in the odd nights of the last ten night of Ramadan.”- (Bukhari).

In Surah Qadr (Surah 97, Verse 3) Allah says in the Quran: “The blessed and valuable night is better than a thousand months.”
